Question / Issue
Configuring the Verizon / Pantech UML295 USB Modem for Remote Access Applications

Answer / Solution

To configure the Verizon Wireless / Pantech UML295 USB 3G/4G/LTE modem for remote access (inbound) applications, follow these steps:

  1. Request a static IP assignment from Verizon Wireless for the SIM in your UML295 modem.  Static IP service is required for Verizon Wireless to unblock inbound initiated traffic to your modem. Be certain to ask Verizon for the correct Access Point Name (APN) for your static IP service.

  2. Once Verizon Wireless has notified you that a static IP has been assigned, insert the UML295 into a PC for configuration.

  3. Open a web browser to http://mbb.vzw.com or http://192.168.32.2 to display the screen below.

  4. Select Use Basic WebApp and click Continue.  Do NOT check the IP Pass Through Driver option.

  5. On the Settings tab, ensure that the Device Connection Preference is set to "Auto connect".  Click Save to save this setting.

  6.  Also check that the APN value matches the value provided to you by Verizon.  If not, enter the Verizon provided APN and click Save.

  7. Also on the Settings tab, select the Check For Update link to ensure that your UML295 has the latest firmware installed.

  8.  Click the Menu button, then select the Networks tab, then click the Connect button on the top of the screen to make a connection to the Verizon network.

  9. Confirm that your UML295 is obtaining the assigned static IP address via the APN provided by Verizon Wireless.

  10. Simultaneously press the Ctrl + Shift + M keys to open a new browser window and the login prompt below.  You may need to disable any browser pop-up blockers. If the key combination does not work in your browser, use this URL: http://192.168.32.2/fta/index.html?id=SmartMobility&component=PSC&subcomponent=UI&target=UML295_e2e83f71-1386-4b34-907f-65fbb2373f7a&subtarget=&discovery=&url=http://192.168.32.2/engdata

  11. The username is vzw and the password is mbbdiag

  12. The Field Test Data screen will be displayed.  Select the Settings tab.

  13. Scroll down to the Port Forwarding section and select "On".  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the OK button.

  14. You may now remove the UML295 from your PC and use it in a router.

Note: Even with Port Forwarding enabled, the UML295 still issues only private IP addresses to the USB host device (default = 192.168.32.50).  You may remotely access devices connected via the UML295 by using the static IP address assigned by Verizon Wireless (or a DDNS name if you define one in your router).  Your applications must be tolerant of the "double NAT-ing" that will occur with the UML295 and your router/firewall.
