Question / Issue
How can I protect against brute force password guessing attacks?

Answer / Solution

The LAN-Cell has an optional parameter that will "lock out" password attempts for a user definable period after 3 incorrect password attempts in a row.  By default, this feature is disabled.  To enable the Password Error Timeout feature, you must add a command to the LAN-Cell's AUTOEXEC.NET file that is executed on each system restart.  The command is:

sys pwderrtm N

where N is the number of minutes to wait after 3 consecutive password failures before allowing additional login attempts.

Please see the Editing AUTOEXEC.NET Tech Note link below for more information on adding this command to the LAN-Cell.
