Using the Sprint Plug-in-Connect Tri-Mode USB Modem (Franklin Wireless U770) with the LAN-Cell 3

Answer / Solution

Before using the Franklin U770 modem in the LAN-Cell 3, Proxicast recommends making several configuration changes to the modem.

  • Insert the U770 modem into a PC.
  • Open a web browser to to access the modem's configuration page and enter the Administrator password on the top right to enable access the modem's advanced menus (Figure 1).

  • Select the Settings tab and expand the Connection Options section. Check the Enable Auto Connection option and click the Save button.  (Figure 2).

  • If you wish to "lock" the U770 into a specific mode of operation (e.g. WiMAX only, etc.), select the appropriate option from the list and click Save.
  • Next, expand the Manual Configuration section and the IPPT Configuration option.  Check the option and click Save (Figure 3).

  • A warning message (Figure 4) will be displayed reminding you to disable IPPT mode should the U770 ever need a firmware update.

  • You may now remove the U770 from your PC.
  •  On the LAN-Cell 3's SETUP>WAN>USB screen, set the Connection Type to "Standard 3G/4G Modem", the Modem Brand to "Auto" and the APN Type to "Auto" (Figure 5).

  • Click Save Settings at the bottom of the screen.
  • Insert the U770 modem into the LAN-Cell 3.
  • After several seconds, refresh the SETUP>WAN page to display the abbreviated configuration shown in Figure 6.

The LAN-Cell 3 will now begin communications with the U770 modem. You will observe the USB interface going up and own several times while the initial connection is established.  Once complete, the USB WAN section of the status column will appear as shown in Figure 7, and the Router Status screen will be similar to Figure 8.

Note: The LAN-Cell 3 will not display the signal strength, service provider or currently active radio technology in its GUI.  This information can be obtained from the U770 at any time by viewing

Since the U770 defaults to use, you must not use this subnet on the LAN-Cell or any other networks accessible by the LAN-Cell.

The U770 has several external antenna ports.  For CDMA and LTE networks, the ports are located on the sides (Figure 9).  Use antenna pigtail ANT-103-TS9 for these ports.  The WiMAX port is on the rear of the modem.
